Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility. We expect all Members, athletes, coaches, volunteers, staff, contractors and visitors to contribute to a culture where concerns are taken seriously and individuals feel able to speak up.

Our Safeguarding Framework

Leander Club operates a Safeguarding Policy that applies to everyone involved with the Club.  The Club also adopts Safeguarding Regulations governing the reporting, assessment and management of safeguarding concerns. These Regulations are adopted from the safeguarding regulations, procedures and frameworks issued by British Rowing from time to time.

As a condition of membership and participation in Club activities, everyone involved with the Club is required to comply with the Club’s Safeguarding Policy and Safeguarding Regulations.

Reporting a Concern

If you have an immediate concern about the welfare or safety of a child or adult at risk, you should report it as soon as possible.

• Concerns should initially be raised through British Rowing, who will conduct an initial assessment.  This can be done at https://www.britishrowing.org/reporting-a-concern/
• The Leander Club Welfare Officer can also be contacted at welfare@leander.co.uk.  After initial contact, the Welfare Office will also raise the concern with British Rowing.
• The Police or other emergency services should be contacted immediately where there is an immediate risk of harm or a criminal offence may have occurred

Leander Club will support anyone who raises a safeguarding concern in good faith and will treat reports seriously and confidentially, subject to the need to protect individuals and comply with legal and regulatory obligations.

How Safeguarding Concerns Are Managed

Safeguarding concerns will be handled in accordance with the British Rowing’s Safeguarding Regulations, which the Club has currently adopted as it’s own Safeguarding Regulations, and the British Rowing safeguarding framework.

British Rowing is responsible for the triage and management of safeguarding reports made by affiliated rowing clubs. Leander Club will work with British Rowing and any relevant statutory authorities to ensure that appropriate action is taken to safeguard those involved.

Where appropriate, Leander Club may introduce interim or permanent safeguarding measures to protect individuals and the wider Club community. This may include temporary restrictions, conditions on participation or, where appropriate, disciplinary action or termination of membership.

Failure to comply with any safeguarding measure imposed under the Safeguarding Regulations may itself constitute a disciplinary matter.

Clean Sport

Leander Club strongly advocates clean sport and abides by the rules and regulations of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) to protect the integrity of rowing.
