Ten years ago, the directors of Leander Club asked Jane and Andy Trotman to look at a number of extra-mural activities to enlarge the club’s initiatives off the river.
Since then, a unique book group has met once every six weeks in the evening to discuss books and then dine together. It is composed equally of men and women, is attended by an average of 14 members and discusses four books each meeting.
The members suggest titles for reading over the next six weeks and Jane chooses the books and presents a mix of novels (some modern, some traditional), biography, history and sports books.
The club is an example of ‘Fun with a Purpose’. The discussions are wide ranging and always amicable, with many personal anecdotes spicing the commentary.
Club President, Dick Lester said: “Congratulations to Jane and Andy for getting together an amusing and eclectic bunch of bookworms and encouraging me to read books that previously I would never have contemplated reading yet alone heard of. Looking forward to the next chapter!”
Sir George Cox said: “What I like about the group is its eclectic composition, variety of opinions and lack of posturing. It’s refreshing in today’s world to see people strongly disagreeing with such good humour!”
We are always keen to support Members who are keen to set up new social or fitness groups. Please contact timma@leander.co.uk for help.
