Leander Club delivered strong performances at Metropolitan Regatta, held in breezy conditions at Eton Dorney Lake on 31 May and 1 June. With multiple wins and podium finishes across a range of boat classes, the club demonstrates its strength in depth.
Women’s Eight – 6th in A final
The first A final of the day came for our Women’s eight who, despite a tough lane draw and heavy conditions, raced well to place 6th and a good start to the Wargrave Challenge plate project for the rest of the summer.
Women’s Quadruple Scull – 2nd in A Final
Leander’s women’s quad had a strong second half, pushing hard through the middle 1,000m to challenge for the lead. They claimed a well-earned second place behind a strong crew from Reading University but overturned the Bath composite who had beaten them in the time trial.
Men’s Double Scull (Op 2x) – 1st and 5th in A Final
The first win of the day came from a dominant row from the duo of Dan Jones and Alex King who led from the start and maintained their composure under pressure to come away with the win.
A second Leander double also had a tussle in the A final racing some stroke Irish contingents and coming away in 5th place.
Men’s Eight – 2nd and 5th in A final
In a highly competitive A Final, Leander finished second with a great row and performance despite the winds picking up, narrowly behind the Cambridge University crew, who secured the win. Closely following behind were the gap year boys eight who finished 5th just behind Oxford Brookes and ahead of Thames A. A great start to their campaign
Men’s Quadruple Scull – 1st in A final
The quad opened a strong lead early and fended off late pushes from strong opposition to take gold.
Junior Men’s Quadruple Scull – 1st in B final, 2nd J18 4X overall
The Juniors overturned 3rd in the TT to push up to 2nd age group crew and to win their final. A strong early showing saw them lead from start to finish in a tightly contested race.
Women’s Four – 1st and 3rd in A final
This composite crew of Leander and the University of London demonstrated great chemistry and power, especially in the sprint finish. They broke clear from the first coming through the 1km to secure the win with clear water. The second four has a great race, sprinting through a crew from Thames Rowing Club in the 3rd 500 to finish 3rd.
Men’s Pair – 4th
In a tightly packed field, Leander’s pair delivered a solid race, using their relentless base pace to walk back from 6th in the first 500m to finish 4th, offering plenty of promise for future racing.
Women’s Double – 2nd in B Final
After narrowly missing the A final, the women’s double returned with determination to take second in the B final. This crew of two gap-year athletes gained invaluable racing experience in the more technical small boats.
Men’s Single Scull – 3rd
A strong showing from Calvin Tarczy, overturning 4th in the time trial to cross the line for Leander’s last race of the day in 3rd.
With momentum building, the squad now turns its focus to the next phase of preparation, heading to Banyoles, Spain, for an intensive training camp ahead of the summer’s key regattas.
