General Manager

Leander Club is recognised as one of the world’s leading rowing clubs, whose Members have a long and unmatched record of international success.  It’s clubhouse in Henley-on-Thames provides a training centre for its current high-performance athletes, and a social base for its 3,500 Members, especially during the annual Henley Royal Regatta.

We are seeking a new General Manager to provide overall leadership and direction to the Club, to work with the Committee to set the strategic direction and to plan and execute its implementation. This individual will be responsible for the effective operation, financial soundness and development of the Club and will ensure the delivery of services and activities to its Members.

The Role

Overall responsibility for all aspects of management of the Club, keeping the Chairman informed of all key issues and developments.

Maintaining the Club ethos, while ensuring the sustainability and financial viability of the Club.

Direct responsibility for catering and accommodation; and all services to Members and users of the Club.

Promoting use of the Club and maximising net contribution from Members and users of the Club, respecting priority of Members in a balanced way.

Maintaining, and developing new, partnership and business development relationships.

Establishing and maintaining the means to communicate effectively and regularly with relevant constituencies, particularly Members and prospective Members, to promote the Club and its use.

Providing leadership and clear direction, mentoring and support to staff; setting the management structure in consultation with the Committee.

Responsibility for the Club’s finances and accounting and financial reporting, working closely with the Honorary Treasurer.

Acting as a focal-point for Members on day-to-day matters and concerns.

Ensuring all statutory and regulatory requirements are complied with.

The Candidate

An experienced leader and manager with strong operational experience in the hospitality sector, including the management of dining, conference and accommodation services, and general facilities management.

Up-to-date knowledge of relevant statutory and regulatory requirements and procedures.

Track record as an effective people manager and team builder.

Business acumen: managing budgets, financial planning and measurement.

Commercial skills: selecting and managing suppliers, negotiating and managing contracts.

Supreme customer service skills: deliver Member and customer needs, deal with problems, instil the right attitudes in all staff.

Communications skills; including information technology and social media capabilities.

Empathy with sporting excellence.

Waiters/ Waitresses

Now recruiting for January 2020 onwards

We’re looking for enthusiastic local men and women to join our small friendly team as waiters and waitresses.

We’re ideally looking for local people as we know transport links late at night and across the weekend aren’t that favourable for some of our shifts. But if you have your own transport, we would accept applicants from further afield.

Staff are trained to work in all front of house operational areas; the bar, dining rooms, meeting rooms and crew areas.

Shifts vary from 5 – 8 hours, sometimes less to fit around your commitments and sometimes longer, to accommodate a late licence. We can work around college time tables or child care commitments if we’re given notice. Perhaps you’d like a second job to earn some extra money?

Good rates of pay, holiday pay, tips, uniform and duty meals are provided with Christmas and New Year off.

Training provided, both on the job and continuous online training with certification provided to help boost your CV!

We’re looking for a number of other staff to work on our busy functions and in the crew areas.

Housekeeping Assistant

We’re looking for someone to assist our full time Housekeeper at weekends.

Our 4* bedrooms are entirely unique depicting the rowing pedigree of a number of US and UK rowing Clubs, each with their own character, they require a high level of service on a daily basis.

Hours will vary but are likely to be 9am – 12pm on Saturdays and/ or Sundays but may be less on quiet weekends.  Holiday/ sickness cover may also be required.

Previous housekeeping experience is an advantage.

A keen eye for detail and a passion for delivering customer excellence is key.

This is quite a physical role; flipping mattresses, working at height, moving laundry bags and negotiating steps between floors.  Manual Handling, COSHH and H&S training is provided.

  • Head-up or take prominent positions in other rowing clubs and the British Rowing Team.
