With the sun glistening on the river, the mulled wine and bacon rolls keeping the spectators warm on the terrace, the scene was set for Leander’s annual Turkey Sculls.
The Director of Rowing Mark Banks pulled names out of a hat to select the nine crews to race in quadruple sculls, mixing juniors, seniors, men and women together.
We had some great fun racing, dressed in a variety of Christmas fancy dress outfits.
The winning crew in the final was Harry Leask, Callum Johnson, Olivia Caesar and Matt Peters.
Harry, who stroked the crew, has been at Leander now for six years since joining aged sixteen and made his debut in the GB senior team this summer with distinction, coming fourth in the world in the men’s single scull. Harry was also named as Leander’s athlete of the year at the Christmas Dinner that evening.
Matt Peters is on a gap year at Leander having come through our junior squad, Olivia Caesar is in our women’s squad having joined us from Monkton Combe School in September, and Callum Johnson is a member of our men’s development squad.
Each of the winning crew was presented by Mr Tom Copas with a Copas free-range turkey, again very generously donated by The Copas Partnership of Cookham, known to produce Britain’s best turkey. Leander Club would like to thank Copas for its continued support for this special celebratory event.
All in all, a superb day to sign off yet another very successful year for Leander Club.
