Sunday 25th Wallingford Head

A windy overcast day in Wallingford was the venue for our women’s squad and some of our men’s athletes to race in the annual Wallingford Head racing upstream over the 4,250 metre course.
Division 1 saw the women’s eight going off 48th out of 147 boats in the race. Due to new British Rowing rules the Leander women’s eight was put in the Tier 1 category because of their lack of recent domestic racing. As a result of this, the crew were set off off a bit later in the division, which meant overtaking three crews at once on the “S” bend! Despite all of this the crew secured the win and achieved the fastest women’s crew time of the day, beating a strong Oxford Uni crew by 0.8 of a second. The crew were made up of: Coach Livinia Cowell-Sherriff, Morgan Baynam Williams (cox), Susie Dear (stroke), Annie Withers 7, Mairi Buchan 6, Anna Porteous 5, Georgie Brayshaw 4, Juliette Perry 3, Laura Merridew 2, and bow Charlotte Fennell

In Division 2 Leander had two boats racing; The women’s coxless four (W4-) and the men’s development eight (M8+). The W4- raced well but found steering the windy course slightly challenging without a cox to steer them. The girls were pleased with their race and result of being the fastest women’s four of the day. Racing at stroke was Rachel Heap 3 was Natasha Harris-White 2 Katherine Maitland and bow Ruth Siddorn.
Leander only had one men’s in the 8+ who raced well, despite a few clashes whilst overtaking other crews. Coach: Clive Cooper, Whitney Powell (cox) Tom Balllinger 8, Charles Waite-Roberts 7, Ryan Todhunter 6, Joe Harper 5, Richard Hawkins 4, Francisco Mendes 3, Callum Jonson 2, and bow Alex Ball.
