A record number of former Leander athletes will take part in this year’s Cancer Research UK Boat Races between Oxford and Cambridge Universities on March 27.

Lance Tredell, who stroked Leander to the Ladies’ Plate final in 2014, will occupy the same key seat for the Cambridge men’s crew which also includes former Leander development athlete Charlie Fisher at 3.

At the official crew announcement earlier this week Commonwealth medallist Josh Bugajski, who will row at 4 for Oxford, tipped the scales at 96.4kg, making him the heaviest man in either crew.

But it was Cambridge who recorded the heavier crew overall, just 1.4kg per man heavier than their Dark Blue opposition.

Statistically the heavier crew wins the men’s Boat Race three times out of every four, but Cambridge are also the bookies favourites after winning a key trial against Oxford Brookes University who had earlier beaten Oxford.

Two more former Leander athletes race in the Oxford women’s boat – Emma Spruce races at 2, while former U23 GB silver medal cox Morgan Baynham-Williams will steer the boat in defence of last year’s title.
