WALLINGFORD REGATTA

Dorney Lake, Eton

30 April 2006

The Leander development squad featured strongly at Wallingford regatta this weekend, when Vicky Myers won the women's elite sculls and the remaining three crews reached second place in their respective finals.

It was a promising start to the season for the club athletes, who were entered for the regatta as 'Star and Arrow', in keeping with the long-standing tradition by which only those  members of the development squad with proven achievements are permitted to row as 'Leander'.

In the women's elite sculls Vicky Myers was lying in second place at the 500m mark behind Natasha Smith of Mortlake, Anglian and Alpha, but she had drawn into the lead at 1000m and went on to win by a margin of 4.44secs.

In the men's novice sculls Alex Cawthorne won his heat and qualified for the final, in which he drew the favoured lane 3. He went off fast and had a three second margin at 500m which he maintained to 1000m, but then the more experienced Colin Magee of Poplar Blackwall came through and took the verdict on the line.

Three Leander athletes rowed in both the Senior 1 and senior 2 events. Andy Dax. Ed Barry and Josh Davidson contested the S2 fours with Charlie Burkitt, and then went on to enter the S1 fours in which Burkitt was replaced by Nick Clarke, a member of last year's Brit four. Both crews qualified for the final, but the race pattern was the same as Alex Cawthorn had experienced earlier in the day. The Leander crews went off very fast and had the lead at both intermediate timing points, but both were overhauled apprsaching the line and had to settle for second place.
