SCROLL DOWN FOR DETAILED RESULTS OF ALL LEANDER FINALS

6 May 2007: A clean sweep in the men’s elite events got the regatta season off to a cracking start for Leander, sponsored by Invesco Perpetual, at Wallingford on Sunday.

Our crews brought home the trophies for the eights, as well as the coxed and coxless fours, and the pairs. The only second place on the card came for the Leander A crew in the coxless fours, beaten to the line in their final by their own clubmates in the B crew!

There were strong performances for Leander athletes in the women’s events, where they scored two second places, as well as our development squad, competing as Star and Arrow. Despite being entered for competition at a higher level than their true status they proved themselves well up with the pace.

In the straight final of the elite eights a last-minute reshuffle of the crew failed to affect the result. Lining up alongside St Petersburg MTU, the Russians who were outclassed in last year’s Grand, Leander led the field ahead of the Henley B crew and the 1829 Club.

Later in the day the Leander four, heading for the Wyfold at Henley, beat the Visitors’ four into second place, with another five second gap to London RC in third.

The hastily assembled combination of Clive Kennedy-Burn and Giles Cundell in the men’s pairs dominated their straight final, winning by another five second margin ahead of Thames and Molesey.

In the women’s double sculls Rachel Loveridge and Louisa Rowbotham were slow off the start but pushed ahead at 1000m, only to slip back into second place on the line behind the Hollingworth Lake/Maidenhead composite.

Rachel then doubled up in the single sculls to secure another second place in the final, two slots ahead of her clubmate, lightweight GB international Antonia van Deventer.

For many of the development squad Wallingford was their first multilane race, and with little speedwork under their belt so far this season they all brought credit to their club, especially the Senior 1 coxed four which came second behind London.
