13 March 10: Youth and experience were on show when Leander played its part in an Olympic torch parade to mark the opening of the 'Sporting Life' exhibition at the River and Rowing Museum in Henley.
Promising junior athlete Ed Rippon was first to carry the 1956 Melbourne Olympic torch on its way from the Henley Leisure Centre to the Museum. Ed, 17, who is at the forefront of the new junior rowing programme at Leander, is studying for his AS levels at Henley College, where his recent top grades reflect his excellence off, as well as on, the water.
Carrying the torch for the finishing leg to the Museum was Olympic gold medallist Ben Hunt-Davis, a member of the winning GB men's eight in Sydney 2000, and the man who now chairs the organising committee for next year's World Junior Championships to be held at Dorney.
Our picture (above) shows the two Leander men with Henley mayor Elizabeth Hodgkin on the steps of the Town Hall during the handover.
