NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS OF GREAT BRITAIN

Nottingham, England

18 - 20 July 2008

Report by

Leander press officer Robert Treharne Jones

20 July: Leander had their best ever day at the National Championships, where their total of nine gold medals included a clean sweep in all seven of the men's heavyweight events, as well as the women's fours and the lightweight men's pairs.

Finals day started with a win for the Leander men's coxed four ahead of the Henley/UWE composite before Andy Dax and Dave Jones took the second gold in the lightweight men's pairs by almost five seconds ahead of London.

Then it was the turn of the Leander women's four to lead from start to finish in their final, with only the UL/Nottingham composite able to maintain their pace and the rest of the field more than twenty seconds astern.

The fourth gold went to the men's quad scull who went one length clear of City of Oxford at the line and then Tommy Burton and Tom Broadway took gold in the men's pairs more than sixteen seconds clear of Glasgow, with their clubmates Al Webb and Al Sinclair taking the bronze.

Ross Hunter and Ian Lawson redeemed some of their disappointment at Henley, where they lost their semifinal in the doubles, by becoming national champions, beating George Laughton and Tom Wilkinson, gold medallists in the quad, in the process!

The men's fours was another final featuring two Leander crews, won by our 'B' crew, but the presence of Charlie Pitt-Ford in the London/Durham composite which came second gave Leander at least part of yet another medal, with our 'A' crew in fifth place.

The open sculls final gave Ian Lawson another chance to shine after his Diamonds win two weeks ago and the Leander vice-captain put on a class act, leading the field by three seconds after 500m and extending his advantage all the way to the finish where he took the gold by a margin of 26 seconds.

Our final gold medal of the day came in the men's eights where the Leander crew was composed of athletes from the four, the pair and the coxed four. As they crossed the line almost 18 seconds clear of the Molesey/Ortner composite it meant a second gold medal of the day for the majority of the crew and brought a fitting conclusion to Leander's most successful National Championships ever.
