22 December: Leander's Marcus Bateman put in another exceptional performance at the weekend when he pushed Olympic gold medalist Andy Triggs-Hodge to a 0.05sec verdict at the December leg of GB international trials.
Triggs-Hodge won the event in a time of 18:15.14, while Bateman nudged Alan Campbell, the GB sculler in Beijing, into third place.
Bateman was one of twenty Leander athletes who contested the event over the 5000m course on the River Witham at Boston, the Lincolnshire venue which is notorious for its unforgiving nature and icy temperatures.
Leander had three more athletes among the top ten at Boston including Diamonds winner Ian Lawson, Olympic silver medalist Rick Egington from the men's eight, and Matt Wells, Beijing bronze medalist in the double scull.
There was more success for Leander in the men's pairs event, which was won by Under-23 international hopefuls Will Satch and Will Laughton ahead of their clubmates Tommy Burton and Tom Broadway.
