Membership of Leander, whether as an active member of the current rowing squad or as one experienced in the sport and who has been deemed 'proficient in good oarsmanship and good fellowship' - the criteria for membership - is one of the most highly prized honours in rowing.
The current membership of Leander comprises more than 3000 distinguished past and present British and overseas oarsmen and oarswomen, together with those who have given special service to the sport of rowing. This number includes up to 50 active rowing members whose goals include the highest levels of achievement in rowing, up to world and Olympic championship level.
Additionally, there are a limited number of Associate Members who make regular use of the Club's social, accommodation and meeting facilities, and whose numbers are limited to 35% of the total membership.
Active Rowing Members
Leander welcomes applications for membership from active oarsmen and women who are seeking the highest accolades in rowing, and who wish to benefit from all that the club has to offer in helping them achieve their goals.
Contrary to popular rumour it is not necessary to wait for an invitation! Leander has an open door policy in respect of all candidates, both men and women, who are selected entirely on merit. As a member of the Leander Club squad you will benefit from the very highest standard of professional coaching, with the opportunity to progress forward to the elite GB programme. The clubhouse boasts the finest facilities for its athletes, including a newly refurbished gymnasium and a chef dedicated to the provision of a balanced and nutritious diet for the whole squad. You will train on Henley Reach, the most famous regatta course in the world, rowing or sculling in one of the most up-to-date fleet of boats of any club in the world. In addition the club is also able to offer financial assistance for living expenses, subsistence costs, training camps, kit, physiotherapy, and regatta entry fees.
Prospective applicants should in the first instance contact the Chief Coach Mark Banks.
Ordinary Membership
The rules of the Club state that qualification for Ordinary Membership is 'Good fellowship and proficiency in oarsmanship'. Many of our ordinary members have raced in the Boat Race or competed in a Henley Final or an event of similar standing. New members, who must be proposed and seconded by an existing Full Member, are elected at monthly committee meetings.
Associate Membership
There is no requirement for Associate Members to show proficiency in oarsmanship, however an interest in the sport is considered helpful. New members must be proposed by either two Full or one Full and an Associate member. Most Associate Members are local residents who wish to take advantage of the Club's superb facilities.
Subscriptions
The current annual subscription fee for Ordinary and Associate members is £207 plus the ARA levy (currently £5 per year). In addition there is a joining fee equivalent to one year’s subscription, making a total payable on election of £419. For candidates under the age of 30 the annual fee is only £40 and there is no joining fee, so the total payable on election is £45 to include the ARA levy.
